VV WorldTour – A fresh take from Team Storck-MRW BAU’s Team Mechanic

Niklas Strunk Team Storck Mrwbau walking with a bike The VeloViewer WorldTour package is a vital tool for cycling teams globally, and is an essential part of the meticulous planning in advance of races and race day logistics. From DS’s to pro riders, all team members have access, and it is increasingly playing a pivotal role in setting up riders for a win, whilst keeping them safe on the parcours.

We love to hear stories from inside the peloton and how different team members use the platform to enhance their role and shape team processes. In this Q&A we have a fresh take on how VeloViewer WorldTour is used with a new perspective from Team Storck-MRW BAU’s Team Mechanic Niklas Strunk.

Based Hanau Germany, Niklas shares how he uses VeloViewer and the impact the WorldTour package has on his role.

1. What is your role in Team Storck MRW Bau, and how long have you been using VeloViewer?

I am a mechanic with Team Storck MRW Bau, responsible for ensuring the riders’ equipment is prepared and performing optimally throughout training and racing. This season is my first year actively using VeloViewer, and it has quickly become an important part of our race operations. It provides valuable insight into race routes, key course features and live race situations, allowing me to be better prepared and make more informed decisions throughout race day.

2. We spotted your double-screen VV in-car setup at the Vuelta Ciclista Asturias. Does VeloViewer change the speed of your processes on race day?

Absolutely. VeloViewer Live gives me a much clearer picture of what is happening in the race and what is coming next. Being able to see the route, rider positions, key sectors and the location of other team vehicles allows me to anticipate situations rather than simply react to them. If a rider has a mechanical issue, I can immediately understand the terrain ahead, whether there is a climb, technical descent or narrow section approaching, and prepare accordingly. This helps us respond faster and more effectively when every second matters.

3. With two stage wins in the Vuelta Ciclista Asturias, did the VeloViewer WorldTour package help support the riders and crew in delivering those results?

Without doubt. Our Sports Directors rely heavily on VeloViewer to analyse stages, communicate key information to the riders and execute race strategies. From my perspective as a mechanic, it also played an important role. The detailed route information and weather forecasting helped me make informed decisions on bike setup, wheel selection and equipment preparation before each stage. During the race, VeloViewer Live allowed me to react quickly to changing situations and provide support where it was needed most. Having accurate information available to the entire team contributes significantly to delivering successful performances.

4. How has using VeloViewer changed how you prepare for race day, and how do the race managers use this?

The race managers use VeloViewer extensively to analyse the course, identify key moments and develop race strategies which are then communicated to the riders. During the race, the waypoint system allows them to guide riders with precise information about what lies ahead. For me, it has changed the way I prepare equipment. I can assess where the critical sectors are, such as cobbles, gravel sections, technical descents or poor road surfaces, and anticipate the demands these will place on both riders and equipment. This allows me to optimise bike setup and better predict where mechanical support may be required during the race.

5. What are your favourite VV features?

My favourite feature is VeloViewer Live, particularly the waypoint system. It gives an immediate and easy-to-understand overview of everything that is coming up on the route, allowing both the Sports Directors and support staff to stay one step ahead. The combination of live rider tracking, route information and detailed course features makes it an incredibly valuable tool for race-day operations and communication within the team.
