La Vuelta – All Eyes on Stage 20

Stage 20 looks like a stand-out stage in this year’s La Vuelta. It’s not only the penultimate day of racing but also the Queen stage of this Grand Tour featuring the toughest mountain riding.

From Villarcayo to Picon Blanco riders will face 172km with seven categorised climbs where the battle for GC and KoM points will make for an eventful day of riding, and captivating watching.

The climbing stats for this race stage are eye watering with 46km at a gradient of 6% or above. The VeloViewer visual highlights the intensity of the day and where the riders will face the gradient challenges.

 

The pinnacle of the race will take place up the Picon Blanco where even the amazing views probably won’t be enough to distract the riders from the 8km at 9.1% average gradient. Riders will certainly be taken into the red with peak gradients of up to 18%.




Inspiration for this segment can be taken from Alejandro Valverde who holds the current Strava KoM at 26.07. This phenomenal time was set in the 2021 Vuelta Espana and the question is whether it can be beaten this year.
