Race Across America Solo Challenge for Alvaro Nunez

When we were approached by entrepreneur and bestselling author Alvaro Nunez to support his Race Across America (RAAM) Solo attempt, we were keen to support his challenge with our WorldTour package.

Alvaro will tackle the 3000+ mile ultra race across the breadth of America from the 10th June and will have a dedicated team on hand to support him on the journey.

Predominantly used for professional teams, the WorldTour package also provides specialist logistics and performance planning perfect for ultra events such as RAAM. Alvaro and his crew will use VeloViewer to help plan for the challenge. This will include detailed daily planning around the race route, choice of equipment, weather updates, fueling and rest strategies and tracking support vehicles.

As an ultra-endurance athlete we were impressed by Alvaro’s dedication and determination to take on the RAAM Challenge, and with a strong mindset he is focused on completing in under 12 days.

With the start of Alvaro’s RAAM Challenge on the horizon we caught up with him to find out more about his planning and approach to the ultra event.

VV: How long have you been training for the RAAM and what is your training schedule in the build up to the event?

Alvaro: I’ve been training full throttle since the start of this year, right after completing The Great World Race — 7 marathons, 7 continents, in 7 days. That experience pushed me to a whole new threshold of physical and mental endurance, and RAAM is the next evolution of that journey.

But in truth, the foundation has been laid over years — brick by brick — building the endurance mindset it takes to keep moving when every part of you wants to stop.

Training now includes everything from long solo rides (some stretching 10 hours), heat and altitude adaptation, recovery protocols, and deep mental conditioning. It’s not just about physical prep — it’s about showing up with purpose every single day.

VV: Do you have a target time set for your RAAM attempt?

Alvaro: The ultimate mission is to complete this race strong and turn the journey into a story that inspires others to chase their own limits. That said, I’m aiming to finish in under 12 days. With over 3,000 miles, 175,000 feet of climbing, and barely any sleep, every minute becomes part of a much bigger battle — and that’s where I thrive.

VV: What do you think will be the biggest challenge and how are you preparing for this?

Alvaro: RAAM is going to stretch me to my edge — mentally, physically, emotionally. The toughest parts will be sleep deprivation, extreme heat and cold, and the mental strain of being on the bike for 20+ hours a day.

To prepare, I’ve been training in heat chambers, sleeping in an altitude tent, riding through the night, and surrounding myself with an elite support crew. But ultimately, it’s my ‘why’ that’ll carry me through the hardest miles.

VV: How is VeloViewer playing a role in planning for the challenge?

Alvaro: VeloViewer has been a game-changer in the planning phase. It helps me break down the course in a visual, data-rich way — which is crucial for segment analysis, pacing strategy, and crew coordination. It’s allowed us to map out smarter training and understand the race from every angle.

How will you use VeloViewer for the event itself?

Alvaro: During the race, we’ll be leaning on VeloViewer to preview climbs, terrain changes, and cumulative load — both for strategy and storytelling. It brings the experience to life visually and will help us document the journey in a powerful way, both for those following live and in post-race content.

Follow Alvaro’s story via his Instagram and we will be also posting updates once he is underway.

Gary Hand from Espresso Cycling Coaching forms part of Alvaro’s team and worked with VeloViewer last year, and successfully helped endurance cyclist Colin O’Brady and Luca Clarke smash the RAAM pairs world record. Read more here.
