VeloViewer From a Race Organisers Perspective

WaymarkersAs the 2025 season gets underway, VeloViewer’s role of working with Race Organisers is more prevalent than ever, and is integral to improving race safety. From single day classics to Grand Tours, VeloViewer technology is playing a crucial role in race planning courtesy of the new contract with The Association Internationale des Organisateurs de Courses Cyclistes (AIOCC).

VeloViewer’s partnership with AIOCC means all members will now have access to the WorldTour App including all three Grand Tours, 34 UCI WorldTour events and 22 women’s races. The VeloViewer tools within the WorldTour package are designed to ensure a safer season, improving logistics and coordination for Race Organisers.

Whilst teams already use the VeloViewer software for rider intelligence on routes, areas of potential hazards, and opportunities to bring the best performance on race day, for Race Organisers the VeloViewer WorldTour package can be used in a different way, bringing additional benefits.

Race Organisers are focused on delivering safety for all riders, as well as for the logistical and media convoys which support each race. VeloViewer WorldTour package makes this possible as organisers can add Waymarkers to the route in the planning and reconnaissance of each event to highlight specific features – this can then be shared with key stakeholders.

What are waymarkers?

Waymarkers are points of interest along a race route which can be manually identified. The waymarkers can then be used to pass on information to all parties involved within a race, and can be viewed on a tablet or on a GPS device via the VeloViewer WorldTour package. They can also be added in real-time throughout the race to alert teams and their riders to developing hazards or situations along the race course.

The use of Waymarkers can be broadly categorised into the following:

1. Essential Race information

Waymarkers allow race organisers to mark essential race information such as Kilometre 0, the beginnings and ends of climbs, intermediate sprints and changes in road surface such as gravel or cobblestone.

This ensures everyone is informed of the exact location of these key race features.

2. Hazard information

By using waymarkers, organisers can alert riders and teams to different kinds of hazards such as central islands, railway crossings, tunnels and narrow bridges.

These warnings can minimise risk and greatly reduce the chances of incidents.

3. Race information

Waymarkers can also be used to display other race information such as Feed Zones, Team parking, Anti-Doping test locations and Technical Zones to pre-empt wheel and bike changes.

Using waymarkers in this sense helps to coordinate the logistical side of the event, preventing delays and confusion.

4. Race organiser information

Waymarkers can be used to show other race information, such as the locations of signs and barriers on the race course and other detail that goes towards running a smooth and safe race on the day.

This is advantageous to Race Organisers, as the VeloViewer WorldTour package acts as a central portal of information which can be filtered and passed onto the relevant teams, and staff at all levels.

This process also ensures that vital race information is shared with the right people, such as Directors and riders, at the right time to improve communication and ensure a safer racing experience for all parties involved.
